Typical scenario

Dissolved metal was compared with an unfiltered water result

If a new water result shows less metal, it may be presented as improvement in the waterbody. But the new sample may have been filtered while the earlier one included suspended particles followed by digestion. The same element name does not establish that the same fraction was measured.

What needs to be clarified

Identify the metal fraction reported in each protocol, review sample preparation and comparability, and assess the claimed change without conflating dissolved and other fractions.

Materials to prepare

  • Complete reports specifying fraction, method and uncertainty
  • Sampling records and filtration, preservation and digestion logs
  • Sampling locations and times with information on suspended material

What to compare

Check when filtration occurred, which filter was used and whether filtrate or original water was analysed. Review digestion, units and determination limits. Compare sampling conditions and controls, distinguishing redistribution between dissolved and suspended fractions from changes in overall content; unit conversion cannot remove a fraction difference.

Possible outcome of the analysis

A comparability table may identify the fractions examined and propose coordinated repeat sampling where the existing results do not support a direct comparison of metal content changes.

Limits of the conclusions

Different fractions alone prove neither improvement nor contamination. The review does not identify the metal's source or replace checking whether a particular regulatory limit applies.
